Computer Based Learning Modules
Continuing our commitment to supporting teaching for courses in various speech
science, hearing science and other areas of acoustics and speech, Avaaz has recently
published a volume of teaching modules. With their ease-of-use, and ability to
offer a wide range of speech processing functions running on low-cost, multimedia
hardware, CSRE, TFR, and/or ECoS/Win are natural choices for many university teaching
laboratories. In making these modules available, Avaaz hopes to facilitate such
teaching applications and to maximize the impact of instructors' efforts to develop
high-quality teaching modules for use in their courses. The first volume contains
the following 16 modules:
- Getting Started -- Signal Recording, Editing & Saving
- Spectrography -- the Basics
- Wide-band and Narrow-band Spectral Analysis
- Visual Representations of Speech: Spectrograms
- Spectral Analysis: Spectrograms, FFTs and LPCs
- Vowels and Diphthongs
- Fricative/Affricate Contrasts
- Fricatives
- Perceptual Context Effects: The SUSHI Experiment
- Sonorants -- Nasals and Approximants
- Plosives and Affricates
- Linear Filtering of Speech
- Categorical Perception of Voice Onset Time
- Temporal Factors in Speech Perception
- Hearing Aid Processed Speech
- Effects of Hearing Loss on the Intelligibilty of Speech Signals
