Using ECoS/Win
Experiment Form
The ECoS/Win user interface consists of a series of forms on which the desired
details of the listening test are specified. The Experiment Form is the place
you define the general properties of your test, including how many stimuli are
to be included in each trial (up to 6 permitted), whether the blocks of the experiment
are to be presented in a predetermined or randomized order, and whether you wish
to present a set of written instructions on the computer screen at the start of
the test. Once these characteristics have been specified, you can then move on
to define stimulus, response, feedback and timing details for each of the blocks
of trials in your experiment; this is done by selecting Block from the menu.

Stimulus Screen
The ECoS/Win Stimulus Screen is used to indicate which specific signals you want
to use in the listening test. Just click on a .wav filename to add the file to
the list of files you want to include in your experiment. You can play a file
at any time to confirm the contents. Editing an existing file list is facilitated
by scrolling bars, the replay facility and the ability to delete files and/or
insert files at any point in the current list.

This
screen shows the form used to select the set of audio stimulus files to
be used in a particular block of trials in your experiment. The Experiment
Controller portion of EcoS/Win will then play stimuli in the sequence
you specify. |

Response Form
The ECoS/Win Response Form
allows you to specify the set of response alternatives displayed to the subject.
The possible responses may be in the form of images, such as bitmap files, or
text, such as words, numbers, or phrases. Your experiment may be the type that
has "correct" and "incorrect" responses, where response alternatives on the
screen match the auditory stimuli (e.g. for the audio stimulus "dog", the correct
response is the picture of a dog). For this type of experiment, you will associate
responses with stimulus files, and set associations in this screen, so that
when you run the experiment, the ECont will score results for you. Other experiments
may not have "correct" responses, and you are interested in the subjects' perceptions
or judgments of the auditory signals.

is a list of bitmap images to be displayed on the response screen. On
the right, you select the "correct" responses by linking responses and
stimuli. |

Feedback Form
For experiments with "correct" and "incorrect" responses, the Feedback Form
lets you specify whether to use visual and/or auditory feedback following correct
or incorrect responses. Also, for all types of experiments you may use a non-contingent
type of feedback which will motivate the subject to continue.

This
screen shows the Feedback Form for an identification task. In the experiment,
the correct response will be highlighted following correct and incorrect
answers, and the auditory signal will be replayed after an incorrect response.

The Timeline Form is where you set the timings in the experiment, such as the
time between stimuli, before feedback, and before next stimulus is played.
