Using PROTRAIN
ProTrain's real-time, colorful displays let speakers see how producing a sound
in different ways makes it more or less like the target sound. For example, ProTrain
is useful for speakers who have difficulty saying /s/ (e.g. lateralizing the sound
or substituting another sound such as "sh" or "th"). Using the spectrogram display,
the individual can compare the acoustic fricative energy produced when he or she
says /s/ to a correctly-produced model previously recorded by the clinician. This
practice can later be used to improve production in connected speech.
ProTrain's flexible set-up system allows you to specify training sessions for
your clients using prerecorded target sounds. You can select which target signals
you would like your client to use during any given treatment session and these
can easily be modified as the client progresses. Clients can also use ProTrain
on their own to supplement within-clinic therapy and to advance more rapidly,
using sessions you have created to suit the client's individual needs.
Sample ProTrain Session
Robin is an eight year old girl who is substituting "uh" for "er". In the early
stages of therapy, the formant display is used to teach the child to attend to
the visual aspects of speech sounds.

Production of "uh" and "er". Ask
the child to describe the visual difference between the two sounds. Focus
the child's attention on the second sound, which is the target.

Next, have Robin experiment using the record screen - at this stage, have her
try to approximate the target "er" sound making a change in the F2 track. Once
Robin has experienced success at this task, move to the single word level and
set up a session. To do this, record a normal speaker producing the target sound
accurately in single words. These can be recorded in the Record Screen and saved
to a file. Now the Create Session Screen is employed to select the target utterances
you wish to have Robin match.

These may be in any display type. For Robin, the files are exclusively formant

Save the session file by simply selecting the "Save" icon. Now that a Session
has been created, move to the Run Session screen. Open the session that you have
created, and the first target sample appears in the upper "Teacher" window.

The
lower "Student" window is where the client's speech is displayed.

ProTrain makes it easy to move to next and previous targets in the session using
buttons along the right side of the screen. Clients can practice matching target
utterances more than once.
