Using
IVANS
On-screen Forms Simplify Use
The IVANS system is organized as a sequence of on-screen forms. These forms make
it easy for you to enter and retrieve client data, conduct the voice examination
and organize, archive and access the results of your assessments.
IVANS makes data entry and access simple. You save information to the database,
just by filling in a series of on-screen forms. For a new client, you begin by
entering data directly onto the Client ID Form. This form provides room for the
client's name and address, a client ID code/number and other information. The
other client information forms are used to record information about the client's
occupational, medical and speech histories, along with other personal data that
may be clinically relevant. Once entered, this information is easily retrieved
so you can review it to update the records on subsequent client visits, or include
the data in assessment reports.
The Acoustic Data Forms contain information about
specific acoustic and physical measures relevant to vocal function, including:
- voice fundamental frequency (Fo)
- voice Fo perturbation (jitter, shimmer) using several statistics
- glottal noise (NNE, HNR, PA, SFR)
- sustained phonation (for vowels and S/Z ratio)
- voice amplitude (mean RMS voice amplitude and dynamic range)
- phonational range
- vocal rise/fall time
- voice tremor
- spectral measures (formant frequencies & bandwidths, LTASS and Spectral Tilt)
- other objective physical and physiological measures such as airflow or EGG data
collected using other instruments
The Perceptual Rating Forms allow systematic ratings
of the perceived quality and characteristics of client speech to be obtained.
Once entered on the appropriate form, data of any type may be retrieved for later
review and or for use in the preparation of clinical reports. You can move from
form to form just by clicking your mouse on a button or tab associated with the
desired form.
Controlling Analysis Parameters
Other manufacturers don't give you the control you need to tailor your measures
to your client. IVANS provides default parameter settings that work with most
voices, but you can also control the details of your measurements, choosing which
methods you want to use with particular voices. You can even control the specific
parameters of the measurement method, if you wish. Once these factors have been
specified to your satisfaction, you can take your measurements and display the
results. At every step, you can view the results of your various actions on-screen,
so you can change, quickly accept or redo your measurements, as appropriate.
Reviewing Assessment Results
IVANS makes it easy for you to summarize the results of any assessment, to track
the progress of your clients and to prepare clinical reports of this progress.
All this information can be stored in the client's file, so it will be readily
available for you to review. As well, all the information in the client's file
can be imported into your Windows-based wordprocessor or report generator to facilitate
report preparation.
The results of any acoustic voice assessment can be recalled from the client's
file and displayed on-screen for your review. One form displays all summary measures,
such as mean vowel phonation time for each vowel target, mean s/z ratio, Harmonic
to noise ratio, and so on, in the form of a table. Another form summarizes the
key measures in a multidimensional plot, allowing you to compare the performance
of your client against a database of norms. Finally, plots of individual measures
are available. For example, you can examine formant tracks or the pitch track
for any desired signal. Data obtained across several sessions can also be examined
to observe the client's progress across a course of treatment.
Preparing Clinical Reports
IVANS assists in the preparation of clinic reports, by collecting and organizing
the data obtained during one or more assessments and making this available to
you to import into a report generation or word processing program. When you are
ready to prepare your report, you just tell IVANS what data you would like to
have exported for your report. All data collected during any assessment can be
exported, and selected across-session comparisons can also be exported in this
way. The information available for this file includes:
- Clinic identification information
- Personal Client Data (name, record number, etc.)
- Dates of Previous Evaluations & Treatments
- History of Problem (onset, duration, prior episodes, treatments, outcomes)
- Voice Symptom History (Variability/Consistency, Associated Symptoms)
- Clinical Observations and Physiological Implications
- Perceptual Ratings of quality of client's speech
- Other Behavioral Observations
- Detailed Acoustic Measures of Vocal Function
- Physical and Physiological Measures
- Voice Use History
- Health History
- Clinical Observations
- Social, occupational, recreational history
- Observations of client's ability to modify vocal behavior
- Diagnostic Impressions
- Recommendations
- Prognostic Considerations
Specific measures or entries can be selected, within the above categories, to
customize your report, depending on the needs of the receiving agency, and the
status of your client.
